Ladies of the Circle of Perfection

Lady Juanita Taylor of New Jersey graced the 3rd Annual Banquet of the Most Illustrious Prince Hall Grand Council, State of Illinois and Jurisdiction, wearing her Purple Fez. Heroine Doris T. Anderson and Heroine Ethel Jones were impressed.  They went to the Grand Thrice Illustrious Master, James F. Clarke, Sr. and inquired if such a house could be started in Illinois. The first list of interested Heroines and Eastern Star females was submitted and thirteen ladies answered the call, assembling in the home of Past Grand Master Levi L. Rose. Those in attendance were:  Joyce Walkup, Martha Walker, Alrine Rucker, Marie Burris, Beverly Sampson, Doretha Tarleton, Naomi L. Washington, H. Lorraine Jeter, Willie M. Clay, Mary L. Jones, Jeanette D. Gary, Ernestine Connor, Ethel M. Jones, Leona Edwards, Maple Spearmon, Oscar V. Washington, Leroy R. Gary, Oscar McDonald and Charles M. Jones, Jr. Those who were unable to attend were: Doris T. Anderson, Paulette Brown, Marguerite Young, Gayle P. Jones, Delia Walls, Dollie L. Sanders, Carol Anderson and Ruth McFadden.

The meeting was opened by GTIM James F. Clarke, Sr. and he appointed Joyce Walkup as the organizational Secretary with Prayer by Levi L. Rose. GTIM Clarke, Sr. explained that the regalia was a Purple Fez and white dress and the ladies were informed that in accordance to the directions of Grand Master Archie C. Senter, of Illinois, anyone desiring to join the Circle must be a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. 

Illustrious Companion Eugene A. Williams held the election and the following officers were elected by one unanimous ballot: President-H. Lorraine Jeter, 1st Vice President-Joyce Walkup, 2nd Vice President-Jeanette D. Gary, Treasurer-Martha Walker and Secretary-Naomi L. Washington. The following appointments were also made: Assistant Secretary- Beverly Sampson, Corresponding Secretary-Marie Burris, Chaplain-Doretha Tarleton, Sgt. At Arms-Leona Edwards, Lady on Courtesy-Maple Spearmon, Historian-Mary L. Jones and Ways & Means Chairman-Jeanette D. Gary.  The officers were installed by IC Leroy R. Gary. GTIM James F. Clarke, Sr. appointed Levi L. Rose, Leroy R. Gary and Oscar McDonald Royal Advisors.

February 14, 1989. GTIM James F. Clarke, Sr., issued a dispensation, authorizing the formation of the Ladies of the Circle of Perfection Study Club of Illinois with the correction that each female must be a Heroine of Jericho. Male members must be a Master Mason, a Holy Royal Arch Mason and an Illustrious Companion, Royal & Select Master.

February 23, 1989 an ADENDUM was issued stating that all female applicants must be in a Heroine of Jericho Court, wife, mother, daughter or widow of an Illustrious Companion, Royal & Select Master, except by dispensation from the Grand Thrice Illustrious Master. The grandfather clause as stipulated in the Law of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, as it pertains to membership in the Eastern Star shall apply until such time as a Charter has been issued to said Study Club. From the date of receipt of said Charter, the Female applicants will have to hold membership in the Eastern Star and Heroines of Jericho. September 2, 1991, the degree work was performed on sixty-three females and males. Four Courts were formed—Prince Hall, Ellis T. Moore, James E. Anderson and Robert Williams.

May 13, 1992, Grand Thrice Illustrious Master Eugene A. Williams requested of Grand Master James Gayles, permission to form a Grand Court, Ladies of the Circle of Perfection, State of Illinois. July 22, 1992 notice was given to the members to be present on Saturday, September 5, 1992 in full regalia for the formation and this “One Special Event Election.”  The Ladies of the Circle of Perfection were escorted into the meeting hall for the purpose of forming a Grand Court of Illinois. After the ceremony was completed and by unanimous vote of all present, it was approved that this Grand Court will be known as “LEVI H. MORRIS GRAND COURT”.  The first elected officers included:

§         Royal Grand Deputy Matron-RM H. Lorraine Jeter

§         Royal Principal Conductress-RM Rachel Carter

§         Royal Grand Treasurer – RM Carol Anderson

§         Royal Grand Secretary-RM Naomi L. Washington

§         Royal Grand Associate Conductress-RM Dollie L. Sanders

§         Royal Grand Conductress of Ceremonies-RM Ethel M. Jones

The first appointed officers included:

§         Royal Grand Chief Advisor-ICG Leroy R. Gary

§         Royal 1st Advisor-ICG John Kindle

§         Royal 2nd Advisor-ICG Norris Gleaves

§         Royal Grand Lecturer-PGTIM James F. Clarke, Sr.

The officers were installed to begin work as Ladies of the Circle of Perfection in Illinois.  On November 19, 1993, both bodies participated in a marriage ceremony uniting the Grand Council and Grand Court.  Hence the start of a wonderful, enduring relationship of the Grand  Cryptic Rite in Illinois.
