Knights of the York Cross of Honor

May 9, 1997 in Chicago, Illinois, the Nation’s third Priory (Illinois) in all of Prince Hall Masonry was chartered under the banner of John W. Thompson, Jr. Priory #3.  The name of said Priory was chosen in honor of the late John W. Thompson, Jr.  Illustrious Thompson was one of Illinois’ most knowledgeable men in all of York Rite Masonry (P.H.A.).  His legacy to the Order is second to none.

The first Eminent Prior of the Priory was Charles M. Jones, Jr., 33o (KYCH).  It was through Knight Jones’ efforts, fortitude and leadership that this Priory came to fruition in a rather short time.  At its time of inception there were only two other chartered Priories (P.H.A.) in the United States or in any other Province - Alpha Priory #1 of Ohio and John Gilmore Priory #2 of Pennsylvania.1

A Priory in this context is the highest Masonic body on the York Rite “side” of Masonry.  It is the compilation of York Rite Masonry.  Its Masonic Degree is called the “Knights of the York Cross of Honor” or KYCH  Its history is very rich.  Only those who have been elected and served as Worshipful Masters (Blue Lodges), Excellent High Priests (Holy Royal Arch Chapters), Thrice Illustrious Masters (Royal and Select Master Councils) and Eminent Commanders (Knight Templar Commanderies) are eligible for such majestic membership.

John W. Thompson, Jr. was one of the foremost Masonic historians within the state of Illinois undoubtedly from his past leadership experiences.  He served as a Past Master of Universal Lodge #65, Past Most Excellent Grand High Priest, Past Right Eminent Grand Commander and Grand Recorder for the Most Illustrious Prince Hall Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters.
