What is the York Rite?

"When a man is initiated, passed and raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason, he receives the foundation of Freemasonry. This is the basis on which he can build his Masonic education and his spiritual temple. This portion of his Masonic education can be equated to Elementary School. The York Rite is one path that gives a broader knowledge of the Symbolic or Blue Lodge degrees. These degrees can be equated to High School. Without these degrees and orders our Masonic education cannot be considered complete." - M.E.C. Lorenzo P. Pious, PMEGHP, MEPHGC HRAM of IL

The York Rite is a branch of Freemasonry in the United States in which a Master Mason may decide to join for further exposure to Masonic knowledge. The divisions within the York Rite and the requirements for membership differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but the essentials are the same. In all the workings the one requirement is that all male applicants be in possession of the third degree, that of Master Mason, and that all female applicants to the appendant bodies of the York Rite be members of the Order of the Eastern Star.

The origins of the Prince Hall York Rite of Illinois begin just after the United States Civil War with the establishment of Holy Royal Arch Masonry and the Heroines of Jericho and now include the following Grand Bodies:
